Minibreak with panoramic sea setting at Stunning Kalkudha & Pasikudha Sri Lanka
Even though the country is still not fully recovered preventing from COVID 19, we were eagerly in need of a break for this hustle-bustle routine. We looked for a beachy living area gazing at nothing else but sand, sea, sky & sunrise. So we selected the stunning & pristine beach resorts of Kalkudha & Pasikudha.
What is Kalkudha beach?
The Kalkudha beach is located approximately 282Km to the east of Colombo & 35Km north of Batticaloa. It is a wide pristine beach with natural beauty stretched out with soft white sandy shores & a tranquil atmosphere. This is a less crowded beach which is ideal for a peaceful vacation. The beautiful natural reef situated in offshore gives protection to the beach. The water is shallow & clear where can wade approximately 50mts into to the sea. However, the waves here are unpredictable.
What is Passikudha beach?
The Passikudha beach is located south to the Kalkudha beach 35Km away from Batticaloa, with its natural beauty of horseshoe shaped bay, clear blue water, and the endless sandy shore is well known as one of the most secured beaches for swimming in Sri Lanka. Unlike Kalkudha beach it is linked with many more hotels, restaurants, and so on. Because of the shallow natural coral reef NARA (National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency) has suggested it as a Marine Sanctuary. Rather than the Kalkudha beach, Passikudha beach is more developed in infrastructure.
What can be done in Pasikudha & Kalkudha beaches?
In comparison to other beaches of Sri Lanka, Pasikudha & Kalkudha are less crowded. So you can soak up the sun, do scuba diving, windsurfing, kite surfing, snorkeling, water skiing & also explore marine life.
How is the climate?
The best time to visit Kalkudha&Passikudha is during the May to September. In this period the waves are calm & the weather is ideal for water sports. Weather is about 25 to 32 degrees of Celsius on average.
What to see?
Other than the lovely beaches you can visit the Kalkudha Jetty, Batticaloa lagoon, Batticaloa fort, Batticaloa lighthouse, Batticaloa gate, and the Mahathma Gandhi Park, Kalladi Bridge, The Valachchenei lagoon, Vakari lagoon & coconut culture park while staying in Passikudha or kalkudha.
How to get there?
If you are going by a private vehicle by road its nearly six-hour drive via A11 highway. There are several alternative roads you can find by using google maps.
If you are using public traveling mode like bus, the best choice is to catch a bus to Valachchenei. From Colombo Pettah buses are leaving at night & arriving Valaichchinei in the morning which takes around 13 hours of travel time.
If traveling by train, you have to drop off at Valaichchinei station from Colombo fort which is 8 hours journey. After arriving at Valaichchinei take a taxi to Kalkudha or Passikudha which is only a short distance.
Our Stay
Since we were looking for a calmly break, we stayed two nights at Laya Waves Kalkudha, a hotel operates by Sri Lanka Army. Hats off & thumbs up for the superb service given by the staff of Laya waves to make our stay a memorable one. Its exquisite cuisine specially the fresh seafood are mouthwatering. The hotel surrounding is magnificent with quietness & cleanliness where we could enjoy the sea breeze peacefully. Highly recommend the hotel & it is ideal for honeymoon selection also.
Ultimately this minibreak holiday has become the best unplanned holiday ever spent at stunning Kalkudha & Passikudha in Amazing Sri Lanka!
