Stress Relief for Parents: Simple Activities to De-Stress Every Day

Last Updated on: May 2, 2025

Let’s be real—parenting is hard!

Between school drop-offs, work deadlines, and trying to get everyone fed and bathed, it can sometimes feel like there’s no time for us. But incorporating simple stress-relieving activities for parents into your day doesn’t have to mean booking a spa day or going on a weeklong retreat (although if that’s an option, by all means, go for it!). It’s all about finding little moments to breathe and relax throughout your busy schedule.

So, if you’re a busy parent like me, here are some easy stress-relieving activities that you can fit into even the craziest of schedules.

1. Tune into Music or a Podcast

Music has a magical way of lifting moods. Whether you prefer soothing tunes or a fun podcast, pop in your headphones during chores or on your drive.

I usually play my favorite playlist and dance around the kitchen while getting things done. It’s a wonderful way to let loose and enjoy the moment.

2. Escape into a Good Book

There’s nothing like diving into a good book to forget about the craziness of the day.

I always keep a book on my nightstand, and I love curling up with it before bed. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, reading is a fantastic escape.

Give yourself permission to unwind with some great literature!

3. Step Outside for a Nature Break

Spending time in nature can do wonders for reducing stress and anxiety. Even a short walk around your neighborhood can refresh your mind.

I try to take a short evening walk while the kids cycle around. The fresh air and changing scenery always leave me feeling more peaceful and relaxed.

4. Reconnect with Your Partner

My husband and I always have our evening coffee together after coming home from work. We use this shared time to talk about our day, and it really helps us reconnect and enjoy some quality time together.

Finding little ways to bond goes a long way in easing stress.

5. Get Moving with Some Exercise

Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve your mood. You don’t have to hit the gym for hours, even a quick 20-minute walk or a short yoga session can work well.

One of my favorite activities is dancing around my living room with my kids. It’s a fun way to get moving, laugh, and bond while burning off some steam!

6. Mindful Meditation

I used to think meditation was just for people who lived in yoga pants and ate kale smoothies. But I was wrong! Even a few minutes of quiet can calm the mind. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, there are tons of options available.

I like to use the Calm app, but there are plenty of other great resources out there. Just five minutes of focusing on your breath can help you feel more grounded and present.

7. Have a Good Laugh

Laughter truly is the best medicine! Watch a funny movie, enjoy some stand-up comedy, or share silly videos with the kids.

It’s a fantastic way to lift your spirits, and you’ll feel lighter in no time.

8. Breathe in Fresh Air Before Bed

Take a few minutes outside before heading to bed. The quiet and cool air can help you unwind and prepare for a good night’s sleep.

I usually step outside and take a few deep breaths of fresh air, and it really helps calm my racing thoughts before bed.

9. Grow Something Green

Whether it’s a little garden or a few indoor plants, tending to something living can be surprisingly soothing. Plus, plants can brighten up your home!

I started a small vegi garden, and tending to it brings me joy while reminding me to slow down and breathe.

10. Unplug for a Bit

Take a break from screens—yes, that includes social media!

A digital detox can help you reset and reduce stress, letting you stay more present in the moment. You’ll be amazed at how freeing it feels to step away from constant notifications!

11. Release the Creativity

Creative outlets are a fantastic way to de-stress.

I’ve been enjoying coloring mandala art, and it’s incredibly relaxing. It’s amazing how focusing on intricate patterns can calm the mind.

There are plenty of other options, like drawing, painting, or even crafting with simple materials. Find what you love and let your creativity flow

12. Breathe It Out

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a few minutes to practice deep breathing.

I suggest inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 7, and exhaling for 8.

Repeat this a few times, and you’ll feel the calm wash over you. It’s a simple technique that can be done anywhere—perfect for busy parents!

13. Take a Power Nap

If you’re exhausted, try sneaking in a short nap when the kids are down or occupied. A quick 10-20 minute nap can recharge your batteries and help you face the rest of the day.

This little investment in yourself can work wonders for your mood and energy levels!

14. Indulge in Some Self-Care

Light a candle, grab a face mask, and treat yourself to a little spa night at home. Even something as simple as a warm bath can help you feel refreshed and relaxed. Make it a habit to take time for yourself, you deserve it!

15. Start Journaling

Writing down your thoughts can help you process your feelings and reduce stress. Try jotting down things you’re grateful for or simply venting on paper. I find this activity clarifies my thoughts and helps me feel more at peace.

16. Take Mini Breaks Throughout the Day

Don’t wait until you’re completely overwhelmed to take a break. Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up, stretch, and breathe every hour or so. These small breaks can help prevent burnout and keep your mind refreshed.

17. Call Up a Friend

Sometimes, just talking to a friend can lift your mood and help you feel supported. Make time to catch up, even if it’s just a quick chat over coffee or a text exchange. Sharing your daily ups and downs can strengthen your friendships and lighten your load!

18. Cook or Bake for Fun

Instead of rushing through meal prep, take time to enjoy the process. Try out a new recipe or bake a fun dessert with the kids.

Cooking can be therapeutic when you’re doing it just for fun, and it’s a wonderful time to bond!

Wrapping Up

Being a parent is hard work, but taking a little time each day for yourself can make all the difference. You don’t have to do everything on this list—just pick one or two activities that sound enjoyable and fit them into your schedule.

Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential!

So go ahead and take that break, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. We all deserve it.
